John has returned to his favorite view: close to a large
powerful racing yacht, approaching at speed.
It's Ranger, the last and greatest of the J-Class sloops that
raced for the America's Cup between 1930 and 1937.
The New York Yacht Club's syndicate headed by Harold Vanderbilt
commissioned Starling Burgess and 29 year old Olin Stephens
to design the defender for the 1937 event.

John spent a day in the model room of the
New York Yacht Club studying and sketching
the scale model of Ranger. Some of the sketches
are shown here and are the basis to begin the painting
which will be chronicled as the work develops.
